Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment Options

Dr Liliya Korallo

What is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)?

Borderline Personality Disorder is a mental disorder which is also known as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD) or Emotional Intensity Disorder (EID). This disorder is linked with severe functional impairment, high rates of suicide, and a very intense treatment. People with Borderline Personality Disorder usually have an intense fear of abandonment, impulsive actions (which can also include self-harm), dramatic shifts in moods, and they also have difficulties in maintaining relationships. People with BPD also tend to feel empty or worthless, and they also tend to lash out at anyone unexpectedly if they feel insecure. Alcohol or substance use can easily become a way for them to cope.

How common is Borderline Personality Disorder in the UK?

Both, men and women are equally likely to get diagnosed with BPD, however women have been diagnosed with this disorder more than men because men are less likely to seek for help. 2-3% people are diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder in the UK. The statistics for this disorder can be low due to various reasons, such as, people may not realize that symptoms for BPD are developing in them, people may not be comfortable enough to seek help or a proper diagnosis, or some might be in denial. However, BPD is associated with learned behaviours, hence, it can be treated with new behaviours in therapy.

What does City Psychological Services offer to treat Borderline Personality Disorder?

City Psychological Services offers Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) as a form of treatment for clients with Borderline Personality Disorder. Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a type of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is a structured therapeutic approach. DPT focuses on decreasing self-harming behaviours or behaviours that can interfere with daily lives. With the help of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, clients can learn various skills and techniques for them to regulate their emotions in a much better way.

How is DBT conducted and why should you choose City Psychological Services?

Borderline Personality Disorder cannot entirely be treated with medication. Medication can treat some of the symptoms of it but not BPD entirely. BPD requires group therapy sessions which are conducted at City Psychological Services, in which four important skills are learned: mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotional regulation. With the help of learning these skills and behaviours, not only BPD but other psychological issues can also be treated. City Psychological Services offers extensive care, focus, and well-organised group therapies for BPD which can bring a positive and healthy effect on every individual’s life. We run DBT groups in London in person or online, DBT skills groups, DBT for emotional regulation. We run affordable DBT group therapy.
